How to Play Rounders
Written by Cearbhail on December 7th, 2008One of the two teams plays on the outside of the pitch while their opponents play on the inside of the pitch. The pitch people use to play Rounders is rectangular in shape and with it comes four posts (sanctuaries) driven into the ground. The distance between the posts is about four to five feet. Between the four sanctuaries is a marker from where balls are thrown. About five or six feet away from the marker exists a “Castle” where the defenders or infielders stay.
A game of Rounders starts with the two teams divided into defenders and fielders. The bowler or feeder; the person throwing the ball, bowls the ball underhandedly from the marker to a member of the other team, the striker, whom is then supposed to hit it with a bat; which is usually flat. The striker is then supposed to run to any sanctuary in a counter clockwise course and he will now be known as a runner. The runner is supposed to grab the sanctuary once and should not let go of it until the ball is hit another time. Runners can stay on the on one sanctuary for whatever time they wish and the there are no limitations as to the number of runners that can be on a particular sanctuary.
Runners should go around the four posts and get to the castle without having to get out and they will have scored a point for their team. Another point can be scored if the runner reaches the fourth post at no ball. A half rounder is reached if the runner reaches the fourth post without the ball being hit, the second post after hitting the ball, when a fielder obstructs them or after two consecutive no balls. The runner should not be caught by the fielder, stump at posts or run inside posts; they will have to get out.
